EOTD, Eye of the Day?

Ha ha, is there such a thing. I bet there is or how else did it sink into my conscience? I was inspired by a little article in my Allure magazine for a black/ grey smokey eye. I wanted to do a light wash of grey with no liner. I've noticed that if I'm too heavy handed with smokey eyes, it just looks like a hot mess.

Here is the palette that I used and the application process:

click on image for a close up

For 5 bones, this palette was such a steal for as many color as you get. Using the shadows wet, you would get more of a color payoff. Since it was day, I just wanted something light and pretty.

Let me know what you think of this post? Is makeup application something you're interested on here? Thanks for reading.

New Facial Wipes for My Routine

I've been looking for some waterless makeup remover wipes. At the end of the day I don't want to spend tons of time in the bathroom taking off the war paint. I've also noticed that I'm getting bored with the routine, which we all know that feeling leads to bad habits i.e. not washing your face at all. Besides with the wipes I'm able to tote it out to the desert on the weekends with out worrying that the bottle will explode because of the pressure of elevation change. I go from around 70 ft. above sea level to 3500 ft.

We all know that practically every brand has come out with their own makeup remover wipes. Since I'm on a budget I had to go with drug store brands. My daily facial SPF is OLAY, my daily face scrub bounces from Neutrogena, St.Ives, to Target's Up and Up brand. I decided to work my way through those brands wipes first.
Since I'm at Target once a week anyway. I decided on using their Up and Up brand. I chose the one with exfoliating cucumber. On the package it says, " Compare to Ponds Exfoliating Clean Sweep". I haven't tried the Ponds version yet so I can't say or judge the comparison. I can tell you that one side of the wipe has nubs that exfoliate and the other is smooth to take off the makeup. The scent is more of a fresh green tea then cucumber.

The wipe is easy to use. I still use my normal eye makeup remover for waterproof mascara and eyeliner prior to using the wipe. When I first apply it to my face I make sure I hit my T zone first, forehead, nose, and chin. I still produce the most oil there. After I'm done with the smooth side I just flip it over to the more textured sided and repeat the process of wiping my face. No rinsing necessary. There is no alcohol in the product so it doesn't dry out my skin. No oil in it either, I'm not left looking super greasy. It leaves my face clean feeling with no residue.

I love the idea that I don't need water too use the wipes. I just lift the seal of the bag, pull one out, wipe, and toss. I haven't told you the best part yet. I've been using this product once a day, for a week. Since introducing this product to my routine I've noticed that my pores are smaller. The only other product that I use that does that is my Aeeno positively ageless night cream, that I haven't been using because I've run out.

I'm so thrilled to find that this works for me. I can't guarantee that you will have the same results, but for the price and for it being hypoallergenic I think it's worth the shot of trying it out.

Missoni for Target Haul

Holy smokes! Did anyone else fight the mob this morning? Ha ha ha. I knew that this would have been big. So big in fact that I forwent extra sleep and waited for Target doors to open at 8 a.m. this morning. Driving there I was almost driven off the road by some fashionable 20 something. That should have sent up a red flag right there, that this wouldn't be a regular shopping day.

As I walked up to the doors, 5 minutes before opening there were all ready 15 people there. Pretty good odds right? I should have just went in with out grabbing a cart. It was such a frenzy and I can see how people can get caught up and just grab everything they see. Good thing that I had a wish list in mind.

1. Throw

2. Scarf

3. Luggage Tote

4. Shower Curtain

I know that Missoni is known for their knits and that the clothing would just fly off the racks. For some reason my heart just wasn't leaning towards the dresses, skirts, cardigans, and wraps. I wanted the housewares and accessories.

This one shopper attacked the display that held all the bedding. I kid you not, she did a sweep and took everything. There was two other shoppers there at the same time and barely got away with a couple of things. I was so bummed that I didn't get the throw. I was able to score the scarf and luggage tote at the same store. Store employees told me to try the stores in the lower income communities. Great tip.

I tried one other store this morning and was able to purchase the double sided shower curtain. To tell you the truth I've been with out one for years. I'm that picky :) So glad that I held out for the Missoni one, as it matches everything.

NOTD: Peaches and Cupcakes

Forever21.com
Color: Peach
$2.80

A few days ago I went on a mini shopping spree. What had gotten into me? I don't do that anymore. The down fall to my shopping whim? I have buyers remorse. I bought a pair of slacks, that I now have thought better of. How many heavy weight black slacks can one have. In my defense they did fit well. SMH, oh well. Besides the slacks, I had purchased this new nail polish. I think it's a beautiful neutral color that I'll be able to wear year round. The color is peach, but has a nice shimmer of gold so that the color isn't flat. What would make it even more stunning, a thick gold glitter polish over my ringer finger nail. Do you have any recommendations?

Now to the great cupcake debate. Hostess has me hooked on their Strawberry flavored cupcakes. I also blame Target for having them on sale :)

This week they only had the original Chocolate flavored ones. As I opened one to snack on, the dessert debate had begun. Was what I was eating a cupcake, ding dong, or ho ho? I know with the internet at our finger tips this would have been over before it started. Needless to say I won 10 minutes later, by explaining the differences between the three. That made me sound like such a junk food foodie. To solidify my win I'm posting the differences :)

Funny little arguments run my household all the time. I think it happens because we are all a little stubborn.

Laura Geller Baked Busher Review

I received this Baked Blush in the shade Honey Dipped through my Birchbox subscription service.
I wanted to share my thoughts on the product and the one way I used it today.

I am normally afraid of blushes and bronzers. My skin undertone is pink, so that every color that I use on my face gets really pink almost red on my face. I'm thinking it's also my natural ph that does it too. This product in the container looks very peachy gold and really light compared to the other shades offered. I was worried that it wouldn't show up on my darker skin, especially since I got some sun yesterday. As you can tell in the photos it gives me a noticeably warm glow that is peach with a golden highlight. I love the payoff of the color, and I didn't even use that much of it. I feel so lucky to get it in this month's box from Birchbox. When it's all used up and I know it will be (I'll probably use it everyday) I will diffidently be purchasing it.

Other shades offered:

Pink Grapefruit

Apricot Berry
.32oz ea. $29.50

June 2011 Birchbox Review

I have finally received my June 2011 Birchbox in the post yesterday. I have been anticipating getting my goodies ever since I signed up for the service last month. What made me pull the trigger was that I was loving all the reviews the service was getting and the quality and quantity of products that were in each previous months box.

For an automatic payment of $10.00 a month I thought it was a wonderful way to try products before purchasing them. Not only do you get your samples of products, you can purchase full size on the site. Accumulating points from each purchase to work toward future discounts.

This month's box does not disappoint in it's super cute packaging.

5 products in this month's box:

1. kate spade- Twirl
.05 FL OZ Spray

2. LAURA GELLER- Baked Blush N' Brighten in Honey Dipped
.32 OZ, Full Size

3. SIRCUIT Cosmeceuticals- Molecular Mist
8 ml.

4. WELEDA- Wild Rose Smoothing Facial Lotion
.17 FL OZ

5. Deborah Lippman- Stripper To Go Nail Lacquer Removers
2 Individual Mitts

I'm really excited to try the Baked Blush today and be able to do a little review for you. I have tried the Kate Spade Twirl perfume and upon first spray I thought it smelled like a powdery floral, now that it has settled it smells like a really soft, fresh rose. It really is lovely and it would be a wonder gift for myself and the mother's in my life. The Sircuit molecular mist is interesting in it's use as a pre-moisterizer, a refresher, or to set makeup. I was thinking about putting it into my fridge and using it when I need a refresher mid-day. The smoothing facial lotion by WELEDA will be something I will try before I hit the bed this evening. I've been looking for a light moisterizer for my face after cleansing since I can only use my night cream a few times a week. Deborah Lippman nail lacquer removers are handy little mitts, that will diffidently be going with me in my travel weekend bag. So I can honestly say that I'm really thrilled that I'm able to keep and use all the item in this box.

So is it worth the $10.00 a month for this service? Heck yeah!

O.k. dolls and gents. Everyone has a wish list or should I say shopping list. This is mine. As with someone who has an addiction to clothes, shoes and handbags this is a running list of things I want. Everything is under my price point of $50.00 per item .

I think it's high time to reintroduce a color handbag into my arsenal. This corally- orange one is yummy and I love the bronze hardware.

I should have put a pair of Wayfarer on here too, but they are a bit pricey for me.

NOTD: I Want to Be a Misfit

If you were a little girl in the 80's you would have seen the girl cartoon "Jem".  The Misfits were her nemesis on stage and off. Reading the plot to the cartoon now seems so silly that I'm surprised that it ran for 3 years in full syndication. I loved everything about the show at the time, who didn't grow up wanting to be a rock star?

I was first inspired to take out my Konad set when I saw a blogger use hers for a Lisa Frank inspiration nails, seen here. Her nails turned out super cute, but since I had to trim mine I just went with one color. I came up with this and it totally reminded me of the days when I wanted to be a punk rocker. I had used two coats on Pink Promenade (seen here), Konad plate - m57, and the black mini polish from Konad.

"KONAD Stamping Nail Art is a new nail-imprinting kit that lets you put designs by stamping pre-designed images on your nails in minutes." -quote taken from site

Each plate comes with multiple designs priced at $6.50. They recommend using their polish to use because of the high pigmentation. I have tried using my regular polishes with the set and wasn't happy with the result it was just too light.  The mini polish bottles (5ml) come in 30 colors for $3.90 each and the large size (10ml) in 39 colors for $6.50 each. For the stamp and scraper start at $4.50. I had customized my set, it includes a stamp, scraper, one plate of my choosing and 2 mini polishes for $18.90.

I had bought my Konad set directly from their site and it took a week to get my product from over seas. You may now buy Konad through Amazon.com and I know that people have also used eBay. It's a fun and easy way to add designs to your nails

Harajuku Lovers Sweetie Review

I am absolutely ecstatic to review the Harajuku Lovers Girls Sweetie Crossbody in Geisha Girls.
I bought it through Zappos.com on Friday the 13th of May. During the weekend Zappos had sent me an email update that they were upgrading my shipping for free! Whoo hoo, that meant that I was able to expect it to be on my door step the following Monday. My lovely UPS man came by early evening of that day. One of these days I have to learn his name, considering I see him about once to twice a week. Adam and I keep him pretty busy.
Ha ha, Adam saw the box and he almost bitched me out for buying another pair of shoes. A new hand bag is just one step up from that (: I wonder why they sent it in a shoe box anyway, it's a flat item. Oh well it's not my job to save them money.

It's everything that I hoped it would be. It measures 10.25"w x 3.5"d x 11"h with an inside zipper pocket  and an outer pocket that fastens with a heart shape velcro. This will be so perfect for my outings to amusement parks this summer. It's big enough to hold all my necessary goods and keep my hands free. With it having a zipper closer I know my stuff will stay inside as I'm swinging or hanging upside down on rides.

You may see the original post that I featured this item here. If you are interested in one similar to this you may purchase it through Zappos.com.

Vintage Gray

I went to my local RiteAid the other day to pick up some Mother's Day cards. While I was there I went down the cosmetics aisles just to see what sales they were having. Normally they have great 2 for1, or buy 1 get the 2nd 1/2 off, and if you're lucky you'll find a  60% off going on. If you remember I have been on a hunt for a matte gray polish. I found 3 different brands that carried a gray colour. I felt like Goldilocks, one was too beige, the other too purple. That day I walked away with this "petites COLOR FEVER #519 in Vintage Gray". I think it still has a bit of a purple undertone, but maybe that is because of my own skin tone. Other than that I think it's a great everyday color to wear. It's a nice change from the matte browns that I usually wear. I'll still keep a look out for a true gray, something with a darker undertone.

Gunmetal

Sally Hansen Hard as Nails Xtreme Wear in the color Gunmetal

So this is my new polish that I featured in my mini haul video seen here. It took 2 coats to achieve the same color that is in the bottle with a top coat to enhance the sheen. I am on my full third day and I would say that it is very durable with only minor chipping. Oh it's nothing that a little dab couldn't refresh. Normally polishes only last about a week for me with all the wear of washing dishes and laundry that I do. Overall I'm "Xtreme-ly" happy with it, it might just be my new bargain brand that I turn to.

2nd Set of 100

A few weeks ago I posted that Moo.com were having a sale of 25% off on their paper goods. If you haven't heard of them I did a post and you can read about it here. I just had to take advantage and order a 2nd set of 100 mini cards for myself. Instead of paying $19.99 for them I paid $14.99, basically it was my shipping price for free! My first set had featured cute girls on the front as seen here. I was looking to do a more of a conservative look with these repeat graphic prints. I'm really happy with the way that they turned out. The colors are rich, and the quality of paper is fantastic. Just like the last time, it took a week from the date I ordered to receiving them in the post. If any of you are interested in ordering from Moo.com I have 8 coupon codes available to pass on for your very first order. 2 codes for 15% off your entire order, 2 codes for 15% off any 1 Moo product, 2 codes for 15% off for first order and 2 codes for 15% off 1 pack of mini cards. They will be available as a first come basis. If you are interested comment below on which coupon code you prefer and I will send you 1 of the 8 codes available to your  email address.
I would love to exchange cards with you or more than happy to send some your way to keep and pass out to your friends. Let me know.

A Dupe for MAC Brow Pencil ?

When I was thinking of switching my routine of using wax and powder for my brows I knew I wanted to use a pencil. The last time that I tried using a pencil for my brows was in high school. Back then I loved the look of super skinny brows and brick red lipstick. Obsessed with the "cholita" makeup look. I had wished to have pale skin and the darkest lips.

Flash forward to the present. Since taking photographs I wanted the look of dark brows again. I felt that the powder gave me more of a softer look that is just fine for day time. I wanted a change into the dramatic for evening and my photos for posting.

For the past few years I have been watching makeup tutorials on YouTube. Of course everyone is into MAC. For years I was MAC user, I find the eye shadows and lipsticks have amazing payoff. In a video I saw a young woman was using their brow pencil and I noticed how smoothly it was applied. I figured I would start my testing with MAC.

I had an incident at my local MAC counter that I never had before. I was circling around like a shark testing the products and eying my goal of a brow pencil. A sales woman approached me to tell me the usual of new promo products that they had available. I told her what I was interested in and she tried to steer me to the powders. I had to explain that I have used powders in the past and that today I was looking for a pencil. I also said that I wasn't sure what shade I should go with- a dark brown or a black. She said that older women should go with a lighter shade to look younger. O.k., admittedly that is a good tip to know. I just don't see myself in the "older age range". I was kind of stunned and didn't think that was a good selling tactic. It was kind of funny and made me try to see what age she was. You know, you look for the crows feet, the lines on the forehead, the condition of their skin. I dated her to be in my age group, or a little bit older. Maybe she didn't mean it to be insulting, I'm just sensitive that way. I shrugged it off and proceeded into purchasing the pencil in the color, "Spiked".

My first impression was that for $15.00 it should have more to it, more product and better packaging. Using it was a little tough at first. The product itself is really soft and highly pigmented. It was really easy to over do it and in my case end up with a pair of black caterpillars above my eyes. I eventually got the hang of it. Like any pencil I had to set it with powder. I absolutely loved the high pigment and if I just had that, mascara, and a gloss I was good to go. Eventually like all good things they come to an end.

During that time I came across a video where a woman said that a good dupe for the MAC pencil was Maybelline's  Define-A-Brow pencil in dark brown. The application looked easy enough and the end results was what I was expecting- it looked good. For about a third of the price less then MAC, $4.00 it was well worth the try.

I purchased mine at my local Target and with my luck it was on sale. I was so excited to use it the following day. Why did I get it stuck in my head that it would be just as good as MAC, I have no idea. The packaging is similar in that it has a slim profile with a twist self sharpening end. Maybelline does have the bonus of an eyebrow groomer at the end.

I used Maybelline's and found that it wasn't as soft as MAC's. If it wasn't warm then it just tugged at my skin. Kind of like the old school pencils that you had to warm up on your hand before applying. The color was not the true dark brown of "Spiked" either. It was noticeably a shade or two lighter. I do still have to set it with a powder and have to groom my brows after to soften it to look natural. It's all just something that I notice and the general public would not.

Between the two, I would go back in a hot minute and repurchase the MAC pencil. Since I don't have the budget anymore for MAC I am open to suggestions from you. Any drug store brands that you love that offers a dark brown brow pencil you can recommend? Leave a comment below, it will be much appreciated.

Whiter Teeth

I think that it is a social quest to have the whitest teeth you can possibly have. We all know that the best thing to do for your teeth is visit the dentist, brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss. I truly believe that the products you use can help in getting your teeth white, bright and maintaining them that way.

The photo above has not been touched up by any means. I have what would be a borderline obsession with white teeth. I am a coffee, tea, and dark cola drinker, 90% of my fluid daily intake would fit in that realm. I do notice that my bottom teeth are a shade darker than the top, but my friends think I'm crazy for not being satisfied with what I have now. I was once told to stop whitening because my teeth were as white as a sheet of paper. O.k., I can get carried away- kind of like tanning ( a whole other story).

I've been asked what products do I use and how often. My favorite toothpaste is UltraBright by Colgate. I know that it can be hard to find that kind of paste, so my second choice would be Mentadent. I'm lazy and just brush my teeth twice a day and not after every meal. I should because I hate little food particles in between my teeth. The type of toothbrush can also affect your outcome. I like oscillating ones, currently I'm using Sonicare. I feel that along with moving your hand in mini circles the oscillating toothbrushes just agitates the food and germs better.

When I was younger I hated flossing. I just felt that it didn't do much and it was a waste of time. It's all about technique. Since I've never mastered it I use the Braun Hummingbird flossing tool. You'll be so surprised how fresh and clean feeling your teeth will be after using it. Another thing that I hated when I was younger? Listerine, yep. Who likes the burning sensation in your mouth? My grandpa had used the old school greenish brown one (gross, I know). Now I use the Cool Mint to loosen up the junk that accumulates.

To jump start the process of whitening my teeth I used whitening strips. I've tried several brands and the one that works for me is AquaFresh trays. I think that I used it several days straight which can cause some sensitivity. When I was happy with the shade of my teeth, I just use the trays to help maintain about once every 3 months or so.

I know that it may sound like this huge process, but once you have your routine down it's not a big deal. I think the effort is well worth it, and I'm really happy with my teeth.

Products:

  • Ultrabrite Toothpaste
  • Mentadent Toothpaste
  • Sonicare Toothbrush
  • Spinbrush Toothbrush

  • Oral B Hummingbird Flossing Tool
  • Cool Mint Listerine

  • Aquafresh White Trays
*Just a little side note- These products work for me and are just a suggestion. I can't personally guarantee the same results.
